8 children among 13 injured in accident
GREATERNOIDA: Thirteen persons, including eight children, of a family from Rajouri Garden in New Delhi were injured on the Yamuna Expressway after the SUV they were travelling in crashed into a mini truck from behind early Thursday.
While 12 of those injured are out of danger, a man, Nazmul (35), has been admitted to the intensive care unit in a critical condition.
According to the police, the accident took place near Dankaur in Greater Noida around 1.30am. The speeding Scorpio hit the canter from behind when the mini truck took a steep right turn. The family was on its way to Aligarh to attend a wedding.
Mogirul Hussain (40), a garment trader in Rajouri Garden, said, “We left from Delhi at midnight and by 1.30am, we were on the Yamuna Expressway heading towards Aligarh. I was driving the Scorpio and a speeding mini truck, a canter, was ahead of us. Suddenly, there was a right exit on the road and the canter driver put on the right indicator at the last moment and took a steep right cut. I applied the hand brakes immediately but the SUV crashed into the canter.”.
According to the victim, the driver and conductor of the mini truck fled the spot soon after the accident, leaving their vehicle behind.
“My three daughters — Sonam Hussain, Soni Hussain and Nida Hussain— my brother Nazmul and his two sons Rehan and Keswa sustained major injuries. Passersby helped us out of the vehicle and provided us first-aid. We then informed the police,” Hussain said.
The victims were admitted to Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida by 6am.
“Of the 13 persons, nine were admitted to out patient department, three were admitted to in patient department and Nazul to the ICU. The nine were discharged after first-aid and the three in the IPD, who had minor injuries, were discharged on Thursday afternoon,” Dr Sanil Kapoor, spokesperson, Kailash Hospital, said.
Dr Kapoor said Nazmul’s condition is critical. “Nazmul has a cervical bone fracture. He is critical but not on ventilator support,” he said.
