Sub-inspector run over by private bus

NEWDELHI: A Delhi Police sub-inspector, who was going home after completing his duty on Sunday was run over a by a private bus ferrying passengers in northeast Delhi’s Usmanpur. Police have arrested the driver.

According to the senior police officers, the accident took place around 9.30 pm when Om Pal, who was posted at Usmanpur police station, left for home on his bike after completing his duty hours.

“Witnesses and locals told police that the moment Pal arrived near a traffic signal in Usmanpur, a speeding bus knocked him from behind. They said that the impact was such that Pal was thrown metres away and he sustained severe neck and head injuries. Passersby and locals made a PCR call and rushed Pal to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment,” said an officer, not authorised to speak to the media.

The officer said that at the time of the accident the driver was ferrying passengers in the private bus. He was caught from the spot and was arrested. The sub-inspector’s family was also informed about the accident. The bus and the victim’s motorcycle have been seized for inspection.

Deputy commission­er of police, Atul Thakur said that a case was registered for causing death due to negligence under section 304A and rash driving. “The man was arrested and the body of the policeman was handed over to the family members after post mortem. CCTV footages are being checked to ascertain the sequence of the accident,” the officer said.
