Bag containing 20 bullets found near Parliament House
NEW DELHI: A plastic bag containing a box with 20 live bullets was found on a road leading to the Parliament House near Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in central Delhi on Tuesday morning, causing panic among Parliament security. Police officials said the packet was around 200 metres from the Parliament House.
It could not be ascertained till late Tuesday evening how the .32 bore bullets reached the high-security area in Lutyens’ Delhi. Police officials said ammunition was of Indian ordnance factories.
A case under the Arms Act was registered against unknown persons at the Parliament Street police station.
Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi), said the ammunition was discovered at Imtiaz Khan Road around 9am by a sniffer dog handler deployed on Parliament House security as he was returning home after duty.
The dog handler reportedly spotted a transparent plastic bag near an electricity pole on the roadside. On seeing the ammunition packet in the bag, he then alerted Parliament security. The police was also informed.
Security agencies immediately reached the spot and cordoned off the area.
The area was searched but no firearm or ammunition was found. A security drill was carried out and security around the Parliament was increased, the police said.
The police suspect someone accidentally dropped the packet or someone visiting the gurdwara kept it near the electricity pole and forgot to take it back. They are also looking into the possibility that a criminal deliberately threw the bullets on seeing police officials nearby.
