NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old nursing student allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at a private nursing school in north Delhi’s Sant Nagar near Burari on Tuesday morning. Police said the incident took place at the hostel of Sant Parmanand School of Nursing that also has a hospital in Civil Lines area.

The exact reason behind the suicide could not be ascertained till late evening as no suicide note was found. The family members of the deceased were also approached to ascertain if she was depressed over any issue.

Harendra Kumar Singh, additional deputy commissioner of police (north), said the police control room was informed at 11.38 am about a suicide attempt by a first year B.SC nursing student at Sant Parmanand School of Nursing hostel.

A police team reached the college and learnt that Kiran Sharma had hanged herself with a dupatta in the first floor hostel room that she shared with three more female students. She was seen hanging by a hostel attendant. The student was rushed to Bara Hindu Rao hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Dr Shekhar Agarwal, executive director, Sant Parmanand Hospital, said, “There doesn’t seem to be any foul play involved; we checked with the girls and the principal but they had no clue as to why she would commit such an act. These students have clinical training in the morning and she apparently told her classmates that she was staying back as she wasn’t feeling well. She was found hanging from a fan by the girls and we immediately informed the police.”

The additional DCP said her family that lives in Dilshad Garden was informed. The body was preserved in the mortuary for autopsy. “An inquest proceeding under section 174 of CRPC has been initiated,” he said.
