NEWDELHI: Delhi Police’s special cell has arrested a Nigerian national and unearthed an international drug cartel that used to smuggle in heroin from Afghanistan via Pakistan.

Police said the drugs were delivered in Delhi-ncr and in certain areas of Punjab. Heroin worth ₹15 crore was recovered from the accused.

The accused was identified as Ekene Kenneth Onyetobe (33), currently a resident of Uttam Nagar, Delhi.

Deputy commissioner of police (special cell), PS Kushwah, said that the accused claimed to have supplied more than 50 kilograms of heroin across Punjab and NCR over the last year and a half.

”On Sunday, we received information that a drug dealer would board a Punjab-bound bus from the Inter-state Bus Terminal at Kashmere gate around 11 pm to deliver a consignment of drugs. A trap was laid and the suspect was identified as Ekene Kenneth Onyetobe. He was spotted and was arrested from a foot-over bridge outside the bus terminal,” Kushwah said.

On search, three kilograms of high quality heroin was recovered from Onyetobe.

During interrogation the suspect said he worked with other Nigerians who received heroin from their counterparts in Afghanistan.

“They used to send consignments of heroin to other countries, including England, France, Canada and South Africa through courier companies with the help of his associates of African Origin,” the DCP said.
