Shooters Jitu, Narang fail to make Asian Games squad

NEWDELHI: Seasoned Gagan Narang, Jitu Rai and young Mehuli Ghosh failed to make the Indian shooting squad for the Asian Games, even as a few unheralded faces were picked for the quadrennia­l event, starting August 18 in Indonesia.

London Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar, plagued by injuries and poor form for a long time, makes his way back into the squad for the World Championsh­ips. The Armyman will be taking part in standard pistol and centre fire (non-olympic events), though he had won the top prize of his career in rapid fire.

THAPA IN BOXING SQUAD

NEWDELHI: A mix of youth and sea- soned campaigner­s will be part of India’s boxing squad for the Asian Games in Jakarta.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced a 10-member contingent on Friday. In the men’s team, India will rely on the experience of Vikas Krishan (75 kg), Manoj Kumar (69Kg) and Shiva Thapa (60kg) to win medals, while Gaurav Solanki (52 Kg), Mohammad Hussamuddi­n (56 kg) and Amit (49 kg), who won medals at CWG, were also picked. Among women, Sonia Lather (57kg), Sarjubala Devi (51kg) and Pavitra (60kg) were selected.

MIRABAI TO LEAD WEIGHTLIFT­ERS’ SQUAD

NEW DELHI: World Champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will spearhead the Indian weightlift­ing challenge in the upcoming Asian Games as the national federation named a five-member team on Friday.

Squad: Women: 48 kg: Saikhom Mirabai Chanu; 63 kg: Rakhi Halder. Men: 77 kg: Sathish Kumar Sivalingam; Ajay Singh 94 kg: Vikas Thakur.
