NEWDELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council has covered 60 percent of its areas to implement “user charge” for collection of garbage and other civic services even as the three civic agencies — North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations — are struggling to take any decision on the same.
The Municipal Solid Waste Management Bylaws, 2018, notified by the Delhi Government early this year, allows urban local bodies to charge people for providing civic services such as sweeping of road and cleaning drains, said NDMC official.
The solid waste management “user charge” varies from ₹15-₹10,000 depending upon the size and category of properties such as residential, commercial, institutional, government accommodation and offices.
“For example, for type-i government flat, monthly fee is ₹15, for private accommodation up to 50 square metre area fee is ₹50, for five star hotels it is ₹5,000 and for embassies with more than 4,000 square metre area the fee is ₹10,000,” said an NDMC official.
As per official, the charges are added in the water bills of shops, commercial establishments and residential properties falling under the jurisdiction of NDMC. The agency targets to cover all its areas by end of financial year 2018-19.
“To cover rest of the 40% users, which mostly include shopkeepers, who have not taken water connections, our estate department is conducting door-to-door survey,” said the official.
Civic agency claims to collect more than ₹1 crore under the head of “user charge” and will be using the amount for improving the sanitation services in the area.
“Already we have extended the tipper services for garbage collection from areas twice a day,” said the official.
The agency will soon start imposing penalties on users for not segregating garbage or creating unhygienic condition in public places.
