Kumar said the girl had told the police that she did not want to return to her mother and brother, as she feared that they would beat her over the alleged friendship with the man.

“Before she hanged herself, she had agreed to stay at a Nari Niketan (shelter home),” the DCP added.

A magisterial enquiry has been ordered into the case, even as the police’s vigilance unit will probe if there was any laxity by the police personnel present at the post.

The girl lived with her mother and two siblings in Tilak Vihar. She had recently cleared her Class 12 exams with 76% marks. The 21-year-old friend is her immediate neighbour and lives with his parents and three younger sisters.
