Kin object to relationsh­ip, girl ends life in police post

Kumar said the girl had told the police that she did not want to return to her mother and brother, as she feared that they would beat her over the alleged friendship with the man.

“Before she hanged herself, she had agreed to stay at a Nari Niketan (shelter home),” the DCP added.

A magisteria­l enquiry has been ordered into the case, even as the police’s vigilance unit will probe if there was any laxity by the police personnel present at the post.

The girl lived with her mother and two siblings in Tilak Vihar. She had recently cleared her Class 12 exams with 76% marks. The 21-year-old friend is her immediate neighbour and lives with his parents and three younger sisters.

The two families shared a cordial relationsh­ip until four months ago, according to other residents from the locality. “The man’s family had helped us in the engagement and wedding ceremony of my older sister,” said the girl’s brother, who services water purifiers.

But the girl’s family alleged that the man had started following her on the way to school. The girl’s brother alleged that the man wanted to marry her even though she was a minor. The two families had an altercatio­n last month as well, neighbours said. Hindustan Times tried to reach the man’s family for their comment, but the house was locked.
