Lakshya wins as India make it to Asian Jr badminton quarters

NEWDELHI: Barring Lakshya Sen, none of the Indian players could stand in front of a clinical Korea as they went down 1-4 in their last Group C match of Asian Junior Badminton Championsh­ips in Jakarta on Sunday.

India trounced Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan 5-0 i n first two rounds and therefore managed to qualify for the quarterfin­als.

Against third-seeded Korea, , Lakshya revived India’s hope with 21-14, 21-13 win over Kim Hyeong Jung.

The doubles’ pair of Manjit Singh and Dingku Singh lost 17-21, 11-21 to Ki Dong Ju Ki and Shin Tae Yang in the opener. Akarshi Kashyap then lost 23-21 13-21 9-21 to Park Ga Eun in women’s singles.

India finished second behind Korea in the group and entered the quarter-finals where they take on Japan.

VINESH WINS GOLD

NEWDELHI: Sending out a warning to her rivals ahead of the Asian Games, Vinesh Phogat won gold at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. Vinesh outclassed Canada’s Natasha Fox 10-0 in the final to claim gold.

BOXERS SHINE

NEWDELHI: Indian boxers were on a roll at the 36th Golden Glove of Vojvodina youth tournament with 13 of them, including six women, advancing to the final in Subotica, Serbia. The women who made the final included reigning youth world champion Jyoti Gulia (51kg), who beat Russian Liubov Makeeva 5-0 in semifinal. Akash Kumar (56kg), Ankit (60kg), Akash (64kg), Vijaydeep (69kg), and Nitin Kumar (75kg) entered the final.

NEW DELHI: The Indian women’s hockey team left for the World Cup in London scheduled from July 21 to August 5.

“The team is excited and we have waited for this moment ever since we won the Asia Cup last year,” said skipper Rani. Indian is grouped in Pool B with Olympic Champions England, World No.7 USA and Ireland.

JR WOMEN’S TEAM WINS

ANTWERP: Indian junior women’s hockey team pipped Great Britain 1-0 to continue its unbeaten run at the U-23 six-nation tournament. In its first match, India had beaten Ireland 4-1.
