The arrests came after the girl’s parents lodged a complaint with Vepery’s All Women Police Station saying lift operators, plumbers and a few others working in the complex had abused her.

In the complaint, the girl’s father said his daughter was suffering from periodic stomach aches and inquiries revealed the child was sexually abused between January 15 and July 5.

The complaint said the group of men had threatened the girl with dire consequences.

The police said the child is also said to have been sedated a couple of times and this charge will be added only after a thorough investigation.

Some used syringes have been recovered from the apartment complex and sent for forensic examination. CCTV camera footage from the complex was also being examined.

The police said that some of the arrested men had taken the girl’s nude pictures and the mobile phones of the arrested accused were being checked.

A liftman was picked up along with his two alleged accomplices on Monday night.

The girl was being referred to a government hospital for medical examination. The officer said medical reports will soon be filed in the court while special teams had been formed to nab the absconding suspects.

The police said the girl is the second daughter of a north Indian family settled in Chennai.

Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) announced that no lawyer will appear on behalf of the accused. “We have requested the legal fraternity to stay away from appearing for the accused and we will also appeal against the state legal aid services if they move the mandatory bail petition for the accused,” said MHAA president, G Mohana Krishnan.
