Republican Lindsey Graham said senators want Pompeo “to tell us, was there any deal struck in that two hour meeting?” WASHINGTON: A Russian national residing in Washington has been arrested and charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of Moscow without declaring herself as a foreign agent.

Maria Butina, 29, was arrested on Sunday and the criminal complaint against her was unsealed in a Washington court where she appeared on Monday. She is in the US on an F-1 student visa and was enrolled at the American University.

People working as agents and representa­tives of foreign government­s in the US must register with the justice department under the Foreign Agents Registrati­on Act, state their work and purpose, and disclose their source of funding.

Butina is alleged to acted as “an agent of Russia inside the United States by developing relationsh­ips and infiltrati­ng organisati­ons having influence in American politics for the purpose of advancing the interests of the Russian Federation”. She allegedly worked with a Russian official from sometime in 2015 to “at least” February 2017.

The Russian official has not been named in the criminal complaint, but has been described as a former legislator of the Russian Federation who went on to become a top official at the Russian Central Bank.
