NEWDELHI: Police have arrested a man, identified as 21-year-old Amit Kumar, for stabbing his younger brother’s 16-year-old wife in southeast Delhi’s Tajpur Pahari near Badarpur, last Monday.

Amit’s brother, Ayush, had committed suicide two months ago and Amit blamed Ayush’s wife for the death, police said. Amit, his elder brother Anil and a juvenile, who assisted him in killing the girl, have been caught.

Ayush, who was 19 years old when he committed suicide, and his elder brother Amit lived in Faridabad in Haryana. According to the police, it was on July 16, around 7.46 pm when a police call was received reporting that a girl has been stabbed by three men at her house in Tajpur Pahari, Badarpur in Delhi.

When the police reached the spot, they found the girl lying unconscious, on the terrace of her house, with stab wounds. “She was immediately shifted to Apollo hospital but was declared brought dead. The mother and grandparents of the deceased who claimed to have witnessed her murder, stated that one Amit, who is her brother-in-law, with two others came to their house and stabbed her,” said deputy commissioner of police (southeast), Chinmoy Biswal.

The investigators were also told by the girl’s family members that her in-laws — the brotherin-law in particular — used to blame her for the death of her husband Ayush.

Biswal said that Ayush had committed suicide when the girl had left her in-laws home and came to live with her parents as her husband failed to get a per- manent job.

“Since the accused had been identified, raids were conducted at their residence in Faridabad but they were absconding. On Friday, a police team received information that accused Amit and Anil will visit Tughlaqabad Metro Station. The team laid a trap and arrested the duo soon as they were spotted. On their instance, a juvenile who also had assisted them in the murder was apprehended. The knife that Amit had used to stab the deceased, and his blood stained clothes, were also recovered,” the DCP said.

During interrogation, the accused told police that they were very upset with their brother’s suicide and even after Ayush’s death, his wife did not return to her in-laws house.

“Annoyed over this, they planned to kill their brother’s wife. Last Monday, Amit along with his elder brother Anil and the juvenile, went to the house of the girl’s parents. Amit was carrying a knife. While Anil and the juvenile stayed on the ground floor to keep other family members engaged, Amit went to the terrace and stabbed the girl to death,” the officer said.
