NEWDELHI: Three children – aged eight, four and two years – died mysteriously after their mother admitted them at a hospital in east Delhi on Tuesday morning.

Police are waiting for a report from the doctors to ascertain the cause of death. While the parents told police that the children died following days of illness, police said they were probing the case from all angles.

Police said they were informed about the incident around 1 pm. The police control room called Mandawali police station informing that three kids had died after they were admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital’s emergency.

A senior police officer, on the condition of anonymity, said preliminary probe revealed that the father of the children, a rickshawpuller and mother, a homemaker, rushed their kids to hospital around 10 am, reporting that they were down with diarrhoea for the past few days.

“It has come to notice that the kids were semi-conscious when brought to the hospital. During treatment, all of them were pronounced dead. The hospital staff then called up the police and the bodies were sent for a post-mortem examination to find out the reason behind their sudden death,” the officer said.

Deputy commissioner of police (east), Pankaj Kumar Singh said no police case had been registered yet.

“We are yet to receive the doctor’s report. It will then be established if there’s a foul play. Accordingly, a case will be registered,” he said, adding that foul play cannot be ruled out at this stage.

Police are questioning neighbours of the couple to know more about the kids’ whereabouts before they died. “The parents will be questioned after the bodies are handed over to them for last rites,” the officer said. Justice V Kameswar Rao said pleas by the MLAS, including cabinet minister Kailash Gahlot, sought clarification of an earlier order passed by a bench of justice Sanjiv Khanna and justice Chandrashekhar. On January 19, the ECI had recommended the disqualification of 20 AAP MLAS.

On March 23, the court had set aside the order of the ECI disqualifying the AAP MLAS for holding office of profit during their tenure as parliamentary secretaries.
