NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old woman kidnapped the two children of a married man, whom she was in a relationship with, from south Delhi’s Munirka on Sunday afternoon because he had allegedly been ignoring her, police said.

The woman, who made no attempt to conceal her intentions or identity, and just wanted to teach the man a lesson, was tracked down to her house in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar, from where the children were rescued on Sunday evening.

Police identified the woman as Reena (one name), who works as a domestic help.

She told the police that the 35-year-old Arun (one name) had married her but had then started giving her the cold shoulder.

“Reena wanted Arun to continue their relationship,” said Devender Arya, deputy commissioner of police (south west).

Meanwhile, fearing a backlash from his wife who had learnt of his relationship, Arun, who runs a mattress shop in Munirka, went into hiding for several hours after kidnapping.

Arun lives with his wife and two children, a four-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter. “He was in an illicit relationship with Reena, who lives in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar,” the DCP said.

Reena has told the police that Arun and she had got married a few months ago, but wasn’t able to substantiate her claim with documented evidence, the officer said. “For the last two-three weeks, Arun had started distancing himself from Reena,” the DCP said.

On Sunday afternoon, Reena picked up Arun’s children, who were playing outside their home. She was spotted by several neighbours, who did not suspect anything because they had seen her in the neighbourhood before.

Reena took the children to her home before calling their mother to inform her about the kidnapping.

Reena allegedly told her that the children would be returned only if she convinced her husband to meet her.

“Arun’s wife called the police at 2.30 pm and complained about the kidnapping. We used the phone number to track Reena’s location. The children were rescued safely by evening,” the DCP said.

Reena has been arrested and booked for kidnapping under Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code .
