Karman Thandi cracks top-200 in world rankings

NEWDELHI: Karman Kaur Thandi on Monday became only the sixth Indian woman tennis player to crack the top-200 rankings in singles, jumping 32 places in the WTA chart. Karman is now ranked exactly 200 in the WTA list. The 20-year-old Delhi girl, backed by Mahesh Bhupathi, won her maiden ITF singles title in Hong Kong and made it to the semi-finals of two other events. In April, the country’s top singles player Ankita Raina had broken into the top-200 and is now ranked 195. Sania Mirza, Nirupama Vaidyanath­an, Shikha Uberoi and Sunitha Rao had made it to the top-200.

DELHI GOVT STILL TO REWARD MANIKA

NEWDELHI: Table tennis star Manika Batra is yet to receive the cash reward promised by the Delhi government, more than three months after her historic effort in Commonweal­th Games.

The Delhi-based Manika had won a unpreceden­ted four medals at the Games including two gold medals. As per the policy of the Delhi government, a CWG gold medallist gets ~14 lakh for gold, ~10 lakh for silver and ~6 lakh for bronze.

PKL-6 TO START ON OCT 5

MUMBAI: The sixth season of VIVO Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) will begin on October 5 and the final would be held on January 5 next year. The league will continue its existing format and will go on for a duration of 13 weeks. In the fifth season, there were 138 matches conducted over a duration of 13 weeks, the event organiser Mashal Sports Pvt. Ltd. stated in a release.

U-16 TEAM PITTED AGAINST IRAQ, JAPAN

NEW DELHI : The Indian U-16 football team will be locking horns with defending AFC U-16 champions Iraq, Asian powerhouse Japan, hosts Jordan and Yemen in the 5th WAFF U-16 Boys Championsh­ip slated to be held at the King Abdullah II Internatio­nal Stadium from August 1.

JR PADDLERS SHINE

NEWDELHI: Indian junior paddlers collected six medals, including a gold in the team events, following their rich run in the individual events at the Jordan Junior and Cadet Open. India won a gold, three silver and two bronze medals late on Sunday night.

FENCERS FINISH 2ND

NEWDELHI: Indian fencers won 13 medals at the Jr Commonweal­th Fencing Championsh­ips in Newcastle which concluded on Monday. India won three gold, two silver and eight bronze medals. India finished second in the medals tally behind England (29).
