PROBE LAUNCHED Police say victim is suspected to be associated with Gogi gang

NEWDELHI: In what the police suspect to be a gang war, a 46-yearold property dealer, likely associated with the Gogi gang, was shot dead by unidentified men in northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar on Tuesday evening.

Police officials said the man also had criminal cases against him. The police are probing whether he was gunned down by a rival gang or was killed over a property dispute.

The murder took place less than two months after two gangs — Gogi and Tilu — were embroiled in a shootout in Burari, leaving four dead.

The dead man was identified as Surya Prakash, a resident of Kheda Khurd. Police said two or three unidentified men shot Prakash around 5.30pm, while he was sitting in his Scorpio in front of Nandan Apartments in Ashok Vihar Phase 1, where he had gone to meet his lawyer.

“As Prakash collapsed, the assailants fled the spot. Locals, who heard the gunshots, rushed to the spot and the police were alerted. Prakash was rushed to Max Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival,” a police officer said.

A crime and forensics team was also called on the spot to collect samples.

Deputy commissioner of police (Northwest) Aslam Khan confirmed that Prakash had cases of extortion and murder registered against him and was wanted by the police in Shahbad Dairy. “The body has been sent for an autopsy, and his family has been notified. Police teams have been formed to nab the assailants. CCTV footage from the area is being scanned to identify them,” he said, adding that Prakash’s friends and family were being questioned to ascertain if he had enemies.

The DCP denied that Prakash had any connection with the Gogi gang and said further inves- tigation i sunderway. “He was wanted in a few criminal cases, but his association with any gang is a matter to be probed,” Khan said.

Police, however, are also probing the gang war angle. “We are questioning several people, including members of the Gogi and Tilu gangs, who were arrested earlier,” an officer, investigating the matter, said.
