NEWDELHI: Delhi Police has registered a case against a 20-year-old unemployed man for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar. The girl, a Class 11 student in a government school, was allegedly raped a week ago, said police.

The matter came to light after the victim told her friends about her intention to commit suicide on Friday, resulting in police learning of the crime.

Meghna Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara), said a case of rape and unnatural sexual offences was registered against the accused, who is absconding.

According to the officer, the suspect is known to the girl and had allegedly raped her after luring her to an unknown place in Vivek Vihar last week.

Unsure of their reactions, the girl had not mentioned the ordeal to her parents. But when the Class 11 student went to her school on Friday, she told some of her friends that she was going to jump from the terrace because she was traumatised after the alleged rape.

Her classmates comforted the girl and kept an eye on her movement even as some of them alerted the school authorities. Police were subsequently informed upon which the girl narrated her ordeal.
