NEWDELHI: At an event organised at Charkha Museum on Monday, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) inaugurated a number of digital services for the public as part of its smart city mission.
The prominent projects that were launched include providing high speed broadband on optical fibre and hi-speed Wi-fi network in Connaught place and adjoining areas with the help of MTNL; operation of the first ideation centre to promote young entrepreneurs; 50 digital display screens to provide free Wi-fi to visitors or tourists at Connaught Place; hi-tech nurseries; solar trees and engaging equipment for improving sanitation services.
Inaugurating a slew of such projects, Union home minister Rajnath Singh said, “It (NDMC) has made commendable changes and other cities under the smart city category should follow the footprints of the council.”
New Delhi was among the 20 cities included in the first phase of the smart city mission, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in January, 2016.
On Monday, Singh also launched the Ambedkar Vatika, smart poles with free Wi-fi, 360 degree cameras and environmental sensors. He also released a coffee table book — titled “Green and Colourful NDMC - A Transformational Journey” — on the green initiatives taken by the NDMC.
Applauding the civic agency’s efforts, lieutenant governor Anil Baijal said the facilities will not only help the citizens but also visitors or tourists coming from across the country or overseas. Suggesting improvements that can be added to the existing services in the future, Baijal said, “It is important to develop a parking management system which will be integrated with information of vacancies in nearby parking lots. Similarly, the agency can also use the smart poles with 360 degree cameras to regulate traffic and check violations at the crossing.”
He also suggested incorporating the facility of filing E-FIRS at display screens installed in CP, especially for women.
