Two ‘stunt’ bikers held for snatching, thefts
NEWDELHI : Two ’stunt’ bikers, who aspired to work as professional stunt men in Bollywood movies, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in at least a dozen snatching cases, police said on Monday. The two were riding a stolen Pulsar motorcycle when they were chased and caught by police in West Delhi’s Vipin Garden near Uttam Nagar on Sunday night.
Police said the two — 18-yearold Yugant Shivani, and Mohammad Sahib, 22 — are members of a biking group. While Sahib is known as “Rider” among the fellow group members because of his riding skills, Yugant was popular among them as “Hero” because of his physical appearance and stunts.
Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said the two performed “stunts” on stolen motorcycles with their girlfriends on flyovers and isolated roads to hone their skills and become professional stunt men in Bollywood movies.
The two stole high-speed motorcycles and used them to snatch stuff from people. Their stunt biking skills ensured they disappeared from the crime scene in no time, he said.
“They entered the crime world to earn quick money. They needed money to spend on girlfriends and buy a high-end bike,” said Alphonse. Sahib was previously involved in 21 snatching and vehicle theft cases and arrested many times in the past.
On Sunday night, the police were checking vehicles on the Ganda Nala Road in Vipin Gar- den in the run-up to Independence Day celebrations . Around 9 pm, they spotted two men riding a black Pulsar and flagged them down. The rider accelerated but the police chased and overpow- ered them.
“Their motorcycle was stolen on July 20 from Sagarpur. Their interrogation led to the recovery of two more stolen bikes. Ten snatching and vehicle theft cases have been solved with their arrest,” the DCP said.
The police said the fathers of Yugant and Sahib are tailors. They left studies during their school days and took to drugs and liquor. Both loved riding bikes and started performing stunts at an early age. They did not know each other until they joined the biking group and participated in various events.
An investigator said Yugant told police that he wanted to replicate stunts performed by actors in a popular Hindi film series with his girlfriend. “He performed stunts on bikes with his girlfriend at night and early morning hours at the new Dabri flyover and Jaipur highway,” the investigator said.
The DCP said Sahib has a page on social media that contains his photos performing bike stunts.
