NEW DELHI: In a freak accident at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), a Jet Airways air hostess was injured while closing the aircraft door on Thursday morning.

The cabin crew was on a flight to Leh and had to be taken to the Indian Spinal Injury Centre in Vasant Kunj where she is recuperating, officials who were aware of the matter said.

According to an officer of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the incident took place around 6 am when the passengers had boarded and the aircraft was being removed from the aerobridge at Terminal 3.

A Jet Airways spokesperson said the cabin crew scheduled to operate 9W635 Delhi-leh plane accidentally tripped at the aircraft galley door. “Medical attention was immediately administered as she was transferred to a local hospital accompanied by an airline staff, for further examination and treatment. At Jet Airways, safety of our guests and crew is of paramount importance,” the spokesperson said.

The police have ruled out foul play but aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has launched an inquiry into the matter.

“We got a call from the hospital about the crew being admitted to the hospital due to injury. A team was sent there to record her statement. According to her, she was operating flight No. 9W-635 Delhi to Leh and she slipped while closing the aircraft door. On examination of her medical report, no external injury was found. She is still in the hospital and as per the statement no foul play by anyone is suspected,” said a Delhi police officer, requesting anonymity.

A DGCA official said they will find out if there were lapses on the part of the crew or the ground staff. “We will record statement of passengers, if required,” the DGCA official said.
