NEWDELHI: The video of a woman accusing police of inaction while displaying her slit wrist inside east Delhi’s Shakarpur police station was widely shared on social media, prompting them to clarify the wound was self-inflicted.

Pankaj Singh, deputy commissioner of police (east), said the woman had demanded that certain persons be immediately arrested for assaulting her mother. Police said the 37-yearold woman lives with her mother in Shakarpur and is employed with a private firm while her husband works outside Delhi.

“On Tuesday night, she was involved in a quarrel with her neighbours, allegedly after they objected to some people visiting her. One of the neighbours allegedly slapped her elderly mother,” said the DCP.

“That led the woman to slit her wrist with a knife and then call the police. We immediately began investigating her complaint, but she wanted us to arrest her neighbours. We assured her of action, but she refused to give her statement or undergo a medical examination,” the DCP said.

The video shot by the woman on her mobile phone purportedly shows her holding up her bleeding wrist and blaming the police of “not listening” to her.

“If I die, the Shakarpur police station staff should be held responsible,” the woman is purportedly heard saying in the video even as she repeatedly tried to focus the camera on the name plates of the policemen.

She was seen urging viewers to share the video and her wellwishers to gather at the police station even as a policeman in the video can be heard insisting that she get herself medically examined. The video, however, did not show the woman elaborating on the alleged inaction or the earlier quarrel.

The DCP said the woman’s medical examination later revealed she was drunk. “We have registered a case against the persons who attacked her mother,” he said.
