GURUGRAM: A person allegedly stole about ₹16 lakh from the account of a retired Delhi Police officer admitted in a city hospital over the course of one-and-a-half months, using the latter’s ATM card after secretly noting the security pin, the police said on Friday.

The accused, who hails from Jhajjar, was arrested on Friday and a city court sent him for a day’s police custody.

An FIR was registered under sections 420 (cheating) and 379 (theft) of the IPC, Vikas Kaushik, SHO, Sector 53 police station, said.

The victim’s son Parvesh said that he had come to the city for his father’s treatment. “After we came here, we took a room in a guest house and our cousin’s friend also came and stayed with us and befriended us,” Parvesh said in the complaint. The accused then tagged along with Parvesh when the latter went to a nearby ATM atrium to withdraw money.

“One or two times he came with me to withdraw money and noted the security PIN,” he told the police. On Wednesday, Parvesh tried to withdraw money from an ATM, but he was informed that he has reached the day’s transaction limit. “He (accused) knew the bag in which I kept the ATM card.he was going through my bag at 6am today (Wednesday),” Parvesh told police. Later, he went to the bank to check the details of transactions and found that he had lost about ₹16 lakh.
