NEW DELHI: An inebriated man allegedly urinated on the seat of a woman passenger on board an Air India flight from New York to New Delhi on Thursday.

The incident prompted the Union civil aviation ministry to seek a report from the airline after reports led to a social media outrage.

Delhi Police said they have not received any complaint reporting the incident as of Saturday night.

The alleged incident took place on Thursday when Air India flight AI 102 was on its way to New Delhi after departing the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The incident came to light after the woman’s daughter tweeted about it on Friday.

“Disgraceful @airindiain yesterday on your flight AI102 from JFK to Delhi a drunk passenger removed his pants and peed on the seat my mother was sitting!!! She was traveling alone and is completely traumatized! Reply ASAP #Airindia #Shameful [sic],” the tweet read.

Reacting to this, Air India said in a tweet, “We strongly condemn the incident perpetrated by a passenger on our flight AI 102 of August 30 to Delhi. Our sincere apology to the passengers of the flight inconvenienced by this act. Our cabin crew promptly went all out to alleviate the inconvenience of the passenger from the moment the incident occurred till the flight touched down at Delhi airport [sic].”

The airline added in a statement that while it has no control over the behaviour of an individual passenger, their crew are trained to handle any situation with utmost care.

Jayant Sinha, the minister of state for civil aviation, directed the airline to follow up the matter immediately and report back to the ministry and to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). “@airindiain please follow up immediately and report back to MOCA/DGCA. Very unfortunate that your mother had to go through this harrowing experience,” Sinha said in his tweet.

Deputy commissioner of police (IGIA), Sanjay Bhatia said that the police have not received any official complaint related to the incident so far.
