23-year-old man arrested for raping 82-yr-old woman

GHAZIABAD: A 23-year-old man was arrested by the Ghaziabad police on Sunday night on charges of raping an 82-year-old woman at her house in a locality under Tronica City police station area of Loni.

The family of the victim has registered a case for rape against the accused.

Both the victim and accused are tenants of the same house, police said.

According to police, the octogenari­an was sleeping on the first floor of the house while her family members, i ncluding grandchild­ren, were on the ground floor.

They said the accused (name withheld to protect the identity of the victim) also lives on the ground floor.

“Late night, around 11pm, the accused went to the first floor room of the victim and assaulted her while she was sleeping. There were bite marks on her body and the man also gagged her to keep her silent. The accused was in an inebriated condition and threatened the woman to keep silent. He tried to flee after the incident,” Rojant Tyagi, SHO of Loni Border police station, said.

Hearing the cries of the vic- tim, her family rushed to her room and other residents of the area also came to her help.

They nabbed the accused and reportedly thrashed him before handing him over to the local police.

“We have lodged a case of IPC 376 (rape) against the accused. It was lodged by the grandson of the victim. The woman was also sent for a medical examinatio­n and the reports have confirmed the rape. The accused was arrested,” Tyagi said.

Police said the accused lived with his parents and was a daily wage earner in Loni. He was produced before a Ghaziabad court and sent to jail, the police said.

In a similar incident in October, 2016 in Loni, a 26-year-old tenant had allegedly raped his 70-year-old landlady.
