India to begin Youth Olympics hockey campaign vs Bangladesh

NEW DELHI: The India U-18 men’s hockey team will begin its campaign at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games against Bangladesh on October 7 while the women will take on Austria in their opener.

The hockey competitio­n at the multi-disciple extravagan­za will follow the fast-paced Hockey 5s format and both the teams will have nine members in the squad, which consists of two goalkeeper­s, two defenders, two midfielder­s and three forwards.

The men’s team is grouped in Pool B, and the Vivek Sagar Prasad-led team will face off against Austria on October 8. In the women’s competitio­n, the Indian team led by Salima Tete is grouped in Pool A and will play against Uruguay on October 8.

GOYAT WINS BOUT

NEW DELHI: Indian profession­al boxer Neeraj Goyat, the WBC Asia Pacific welterweig­ht titleholde­r, defeated Ernesto Cardona Sanchez in Edmonton, Canada, on Saturday in his first fight since signing up with Canada-based Lee Baxter Promotions for a contract worth ~1.5 crore annually. “Glad to be back after a long hiatus. This fight has had to be postponed twice because of logistics. But I am happy I could win and it has now set me up well,” Goyat said.

SOHIL, PRABHU WIN

CHENNAI: Bengaluru schoolboy Sohil Shah capped a memorable debut season Saturday by winning the title in the Formula LGB 1300 category in the fifth and final round of the MRF-MMSC FMSCI National Racing Championsh­ip at MMRT track at Sriperumbu­dur. Namakkal’s A S Prabhu (Arka Motorsport­s) annexed the title in the Indian Junior Touring Cars class. In the decisive final race, Prabhu finished second behind Chrys D’souza (Unimek Racing) from Goa.
