Manika knocked out, three more perish in national table tennis meet

VIJAYAWADA: Top seed Manika Batra spent very little time at the table to bow out in the first round of the women’s singles after losing to 18-year-old Anannaya Basak at the National Ranking (South Zone) Table Tennis Championsh­ips at the DRM Municipal Indoor Hall on Monday. Basak won 11-4, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8. Fifth seed Krittwika Sinha Roy, seventh seed Ayhika Mukherjee and eighth seed Madhurika Patkar were also beaten by three other unseeded players.

SKEET TEAM ON TOP

CHANGWON: India’s junior men’s skeet team topped day one of qualifying to be in contention for gold but the country failed to fetch medals or Olympic quota places at the ISSF World Championsh­ip on Monday. Gurnihal Singh Garcha shot 73 out of 75 to be in second place, Anantjeet Singh Naruka 71 to lie 11th, while Ayush Rudraraju shot 70 to take up the individual 12th place on in junior men’s skeet qualifiers. Their combined score of 214 put them in top spot in the team event, a point ahead of Cyprus.

INDIA U-19 LOSE

ZAGREB: The India U-19 football team lost 0-2 to a France U-19 side in a four-nation tournament in Zagreb, Croatia on Sunday. The French side grabbed the lead in the 18th minute and then sealed the issue in the 73rd minute with a second goal. Coached by Floyd Pinto, India ended the tournament with three losses in three, having conceded eight goals and scored none.

MARQUEZ’S RECORD

MISANO (ITALY) : Crossing the San Marino Grand Prix finish line in second place, Honda rider Marc Marquez stepped on to the podium for the 10th time this season and sixth time in a row for the first time since 2014. In the process, the Spaniard equalled Mike Hailwood for the seventh most podiums (112) across all classes and extended his lead in Motogp standings by 67 points over San Marino GP winner Andrea Dovizioso.
