Rewari gang rape: Accused sent to 5-day police remand
ROHTAK: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) produced three accused in the gangrape of a 20-year-old girl in Rewari before Civil Court Kanina of the Mahendragarh district, which sent them to five days in police remand. However, two main accused, armyman Pankaj and Manish, are still on the run.
Kanina deputy superintendent of police Vinod Kumar confirmed it. “The court ordered Deen Dayal, Dr Sanjeev and (main accused) Nishu to five days in police remand. They will be produced before the court again on September 21.”
The new superintendent of police (SP) Rahul Sharma also took charge on Monday.
On Monday, the president of All India Mahila Congress, Sushmita Dev, met the rape survivor at the hospital, and assured the kin of the victim for all possible help to get justice in the case.
Talking to mediapersons, Dev said, “It is a very unfortunate incident. The Khattar government is not serious about the safety of the women in the state. He must increase his security, as the Mahila Congress will keep protesting against him. We also request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to change the CM.”
Meanwhile, BJP minister Rao Narbir Singh also met the family of the rape survivor at the civil hospital and assured them of all possible help. “Today, I met the family members who said they were satisfied with the investigation done by the SIT. We asked them if they wanted to shift her to another hospital but they refused that too,” he claimed.
MINISTER VOWS ACTION AGAINST CONG LEADERS FOR MEETING SURVIVOR
Chandigarh Haryana health minister Anil Vij said Monday that necessary action would be taken against former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Opposition MLA Karan Singh Dalal for allegedly meeting the rape survivor “without the consent of doctors”.
Vij alleged the two Congress leaders had “threatened” the doctors attending on her.
Dalal, however, trashed Vij’s charges and said he and Hooda had gone to the hospital along with the woman’s mother.
Hitting out at the state government, Dalal said instead of focussing on law and order it was trying to impose a ban on opposition leaders meeting the woman or her family.
Franco Mulakkal, the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar, who is accused of raping a nun, on Sunday wrote a letter to Pope Francis expressing his desire to step aside temporarily.
“I request you to relieve me from the administration of the diocese in the background of the court’s opinion,” Bishop stated in his letter.
Father Peter, Bishop’s official spokesperson, said that there is lack of adequate evidence to arrest Bishop Franco.
“Bishop decided on his own to make his request to Holy Father, so that the truth may be established. He (Bishop) is confident that his request will be accepted by Vatican,” he said.
The development came a day after Bishop appointed vicar general Mathew Kokkandam to administer the iocese as is the normal practice.
On Friday, Bishop received official summons served by the Jalandhar police on behalf of Vaikom (Kerala) deputy superintendent of police (DSP) K Subhash.
Jalandhar commissioner of police (CP) Praveen Sinha received the summons from the Kerala police to serve them to the Bishop, asking him to appear before them for the investigation on September 19.
Father Peter said the Bishop will leave for Kerala on Tuesday to join the investigation.
KERALA NUNS DEMAND BISHOP’S ARREST
Catholic nuns in Kerala have decided to intensify their agitation unless Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mullakkal is arrested immediately.
The Bishop is to appear before the Kerala police for questioning on Wednesday.
The nuns have been on a dharna in Kochi for the last 10 days seeking action against the bishop while other activists are on a relay hunger strike in the nuns’ support.
As their stir got support from different quarters including the laity, the nuns have decided to step up their agitation.
“We will continue our struggle till the bishop is arrested. It is a struggle for justice. Despite intense pressure and intimidation, we will continue it till its logical end. Nobody heard our cries and we were forced to the streets by church authorities and police,” said Sister Anupama who is leading the stir.
