NEWDELHI: Prime Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC) in New Delhi’s Dwarka.
Addressing a gathering after the inauguration, PM Modi said that the project will emerge as a centre of energy of 80 crore youth. “It is not just a convention and expo centre, but a vibrant centre for domestic and international business. It will be like a mini city within Delhi, there’ll be convention halls, expo halls, meeting halls, hotels, market, offices and several other facilities within the campus,” he said.
The convention centre, the Prime Minister said, will help create jobs for 5 lakh youth.
The project is planned over an area of 221.37 acres at Sector 25, Dwarka, at an estimated cost of ₹25,703 crore.
The IICC will be an integrated complex with facilities like exhibition halls, convention centre, open exhibition spaces, mixeduse commercial spaces like star hotels (5, 4 and 3 stars), retail services and high-end offices.
The convention centre would accommodate up to 11,000 persons, would have five exhibition halls, 1-kilometre long foyer, multi-purpose arena with a retractable roof.
It will be developed in two phases. Phase-i and II will be completed by December 2019 and December 2024, respectively.
It is estimated that the proposed centre, once fully operational, will infuse a demand for more than 100 major international and local exhibition events annually. The number of persons visiting the exhibition facility annually (paying visitors) is estimated to be more than 10 million in the first phase (2019-20) and 23 million after completion of the second phase (2025). Similarly, convention based delegate attendance is estimated to cross 1.5 million annually after successful completion of second phase of the project. The project is estimated to generate over five lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Earlier in the day, the PM took a ride in the Airport Express Metro from Dhaula Kuan to Dwarka on way to lay the foundation stone of expo centre. Metro officials said the ride was completed in 14 minutes.
