Man shot at in Taimur Nagar, locals pelt stone at policemen
NEWDELHI: A 34-year-old man was shot at by two unidentified men near his home in south Delhi’s Taimur Nagar on Sunday night, police said.
While police have so far not been able to identify the attackers, eyewitnesses have provided certain details about the vehicle used in the crime.
Among other possibilities, the police are probing if the attack was orchestrated by local drug dealers.
The victim, Rupesh, is battling for his life at a hospital.
Local residents have alleged that Rupesh’s brother had been protesting the sale of drugs in the neighbourhood for sometime. They suspect that the attackers may have come for Rupesh’s brother, but ended up shooting him instead. The locals also accused the police of turning a blind eye to drug sale in the neighbourhood.
Sunday’s attack led to local residents indulging in stone pelting at the police team visiting the spot and trying to burn vehicles, said Chinmoy Biswal, deputy commissioner of police (southeast).
“No one has been injured in the subsequent violence. We are trying to control the situation and identifying people who are instigating others to indulge in violence,” said the DCP.
The officer also dismissed as “rumours” the allegations by some local residents that the police had fired in the air to keep stone pelters at bay. The DCP said a case is being registered at New Friends Colony police station and a team formed to probe it.
