5 highway robbers held, vehicles seized

NEW DELHI : The Delhi Police on Saturday said they had arrested three men and apprehende­d two minor boys, all members of an interstate gang of highway robbers.

Ten robbed vehicles, including six cars, and 15 snatched and robbed mobile phones were seized from them. They belong to a gang led by one Anil Singhania from Haryana’s Panipat.

Police said t he robbers splurged on club dancers in discothèqu­es in Delhi and Gurugram. The arrested men were identified as Vikas Data, Sushil Pahadi and Vikas alias Mogli.

Deputy commission­er of police (outer) Seju P Kuruvilla said that 29 cases of robbery, snatching and theft were solved with the arrests. Of the 29 cases, 27 were registered at various police stations in Delhi’s outer, west and northwest areas this year. The other two cases were of last year.

DCP Kuruvilla said the gang had committed two back-toback carjacking incidents within a span of 30 minutes around one-and-half months ago. “They first robbed a Maruti Swift from Subhash Place area and then used it to rob a Hyundai Verna car from Shalimar Bagh,” said Kuruvilla.

The five were caught on Friday from outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri area where they had arrived in the stolen Verna car and on three bikes to meet potential receivers of their stolen properties.

In another operation, the anti-snatching team of Dwarka North police station arrested 23-year-old vehicle thief and apprehende­d his juvenile associate during a surprise check. Police said the two used to steal motorcycle­s, scooters and sold their parts as scraps. A total of 13 stolen two-wheelers, both in the shape of scrap or in running condition, were seized from them. The arrested man was identified as Ranjeet Tiwari.
