NEW DELHI: A week after 34-yearold Rupesh Besoya, the brother of an anti-drug activist in southeast Delhi’s Taimoor Nagar was shot dead allegedly by a drug peddler, the police in a special drive against drug dealers arrested a man and recovered around 500 gram heroin from him. Police said the seized drug is worth around ₹1 crore in the international market. The alleged drug dealer, Farooq Mohammad had allegedly deputed a few men to spot police movement in the nieghbourhood and paid them ₹300 a day, the police said.

Police have found Mohammad’s involvement in four cases of drug dealing. He was also jailed for five years in a robbery case. Since the three men arrested for Besoya’s murder were also alleged robbers, police are trying to probe if the man has any link with the three.

Police said Mohammad, 45, is a resident of Indira Gandhi Camp in Taimoor Nagar. Deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said during a special crackdown, a police team zeroed in on Mohammad. “On Saturday, a raid was conducted near Khadda Colony in Madanpur Khadar and around 10.20pm Mohammad was caught. During his search, 528 grams of Heroin, valued around ₹1 crore in the international market, was recov- ered,” the DCP said.

Biswal said during interrogation Mohammad disclosed his mother also used to deal in drugs. “We found that he is already involved in four previous cases of drugs and had served imprisonment of five years in a robbery case. He said he used to purchase heroin from dealers in Bareilly and Hapur and then prepare small packets weighing one gram to half kg and sell them at high rates,” the officer said.
