EDMC regularises 6 sanitation workers
NEWDELHI: The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) distributed offer letters for regularisation of six contractual sanitation workers on Monday. The move comes a day after EDMC mayor Bipin Bihari said the corporation would initiate the process of regularisation of sanitation workers, who had been working on contractual basis since April 1998. There are about 4,800 such contractual workers, yet to be regularised.
“We have initiated process for regularising sanitation workers on the basis of seniority. We have given permanent appointment letters to six sanitation workers on Monday after verifying their past records. I appeal to the agitating workers to please return to work,” Bihari said.
On Sunday, an order was issued by EDMC to regularise work of all sanitation workers engaged after on or after April 1, 1998. A senior officer, however, said the regularisation process would not be easy due to technical issues. “We need to verify their personal details, past records before regularising them. The whole process will take more than a year,” said an officer.
Another officer said, “We cannot incorporate 4,000 contractual workers at once. It depends on the vacancy.”
While one faction of the sanitation workers resumed work on Saturday after the Delhi government announced release of ₹350 crore to EDMC for payment of the salaries of the agitating workers, at least 10,000 continued their strike.
