Mor’s goal helps India overcome Japan 1-0

NEW DELHI: Skipper Mandeep Mor’s lone goal helped the Indian junior men’s hockey team notch their third consecutiv­e win, against Japan, at the 8th Sultan of Johor Cup in Johor Bahru (Malaysia) on Tuesday.

The rain-affected match was intensely fought with Japan doggedly defending their territory and leaving little room for the Indian colts to manoeuvre.

India could make little headway in the second quarter too but the third quarter saw them go all out and earn a couple of penalty corners. Skipper Mandeep Mor converted a well-executed penalty corner in the 42nd minute to give India the all-important goal.

INDIA THRASH KENYA

BUENOS AIRES: The Indian men’s hockey 5s team registered its third consecutiv­e win at the Youth Olympic Games by beating Kenya 7-1 in a Pool B match here on Tuesday. Sudeep Chirmako (5th, 10th minute). Rabichandr­a Moirangthe­m (5th,11th), Vivek Sagar Prasad (8th), Sanjay (14th) and Rahul Kumar Rajbhar (17th) scored for the team.

CIMB CLASSIC

KUALALUMPU­R: Four Indians will tee off at the CIMB Classic this week with 22-year-old Shubhankar Sharma leading the country’s biggest ever line-up in a PGA event. Others in the fray are Gaganjeet Bhullar, Anirban Lahiri and Rahil Gangjee.

SHARATH WINS

PUNE: Reigning national champion Achanta Sharath Kamal and former national champion Madhurika Patkar underlined their class in the National Ranking (West Zone) Table Tennis Championsh­ips, annexing the men’s and women’s singles crowns respective­ly here on Tuesday evening. Sharath defeated Anirban Ghosh 4-0 in the finals while Madhurika won 4-2 against Divya Deshpande.

SANIYA OUSTED

NEW DELHI: Reshma Maruri toppled under-16 second seed Saniya Singh 4-6,6-2,6-2 in an upset win at the Fenesta Open junior tennis national championsh­ip at the DLTA Complex on Tuesday. Top seed Bhakti Parwani had an easy 6-1, 6-3 win over Ishika Chakma while boys’ under-16 top seed Divesh Gehlot beat Arjun A Kundu 6-3,6-3. Vaishnavi Adkar the top seed in girls’ under-14 had to put up a fight as she beat Chandini Parikh 4-6,6-4,6-4, while boys’ under-14 top seed Udit Gogoi was confident as he took to the court and beat Mohil Lolitkar 6-2, 6-2.

BABY LEAGUE IN ASSAM

GUWAHATI: Following in the footsteps of neighbours Mizoram and Meghalaya, Assam is set to commence its own baby league for kids in the age group of 6-13. Organised by Guwahati City FC and the Assam Football Associatio­n, the Greater Guwahati Baby League will have four age groups – under-7, under-9, under-11 and under-13 and will start from November.
