NEWDELHI: An elderly couple was allegedly robbed and assaulted by four unidentified masked men at their house in west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar early on Wednesday.

Chaman Lal Sahni, 75, and his wife Krishna Sahni, 72, who live in a three-storeyed building with their children in Ambika Vihar, were sleeping on the ground floor when the robbers barged in between 3 am and 4 am.

The couple told police that around 3.05 am, they woke up to a noise. “Lal said he sensed there were more people in the room. Initially he thought it could be his family members. But when he called them out by their names, a man jumped on to him and held him tight. He said the light in the room was very dim and all the men had covered their faces. The men had locked all the doors to ensure the couple could not get out,” said an investigating the matter, who is not authorised to speak to the media.

The officer said another man overpowered Sahni’s wife Krishna .“The woman said the men were carrying knives. One of them plucked her earrings. She said the two other men took away everything available in their room, from jewellery to electronics. The thieves also took some documents that contained files of her medical treatment. The gang fled from the house at 3.40 am,” the police officer said.

Police said the men had gained access into the room by breaking a window grille. At the time of the robbery, Sahni’s two sons were sleeping on the first and the second floors with their families and unaware of the robbery. After the robbers fled, Lal and Krishna raised an alarm and woke up the family.

Deputy commissioner of police (outer) Seju P Kuruvilla said police received a call from Vishal Sahni, Chaman Lal’s younger son, around 3.45 am.

“According to the family members, the robbers fled with ₹2.5 lakh in cash and gold jewellery worth around ₹15 lakh. Krishna Sahni sustained an ear injury. A case of robbery was registered under section 392 of the Indian Penal Code,” the DCP said.
