Vipasha shocks top seed at junior nationals

NEW DELHI: In a giant-killing effort, Vipasha Mehra knocked out top seed Bhakti Parwani 0-6, 6-0, 6-4 to move to the semi-finals of the girls’ under-16 event at the Fenesta Open Junior National Tennis Championsh­ip on Thursday. Also advancing to the lastfour was fourth seed Sunskriti Damera, who eased past Bela Tamhankar 6-2 6-2. In the under-16 boys’ event, Divesh Gahlot came from behind to beat Naresh Badgujar 4-6 6-1 6-1.

BAJRANG SEEDED THIRD

NEW DELHI: CWG and Asian Games gold medallist Bajrang Punia is the only Indian wrestler from a strong 30-member squad to get a seeding at the upcoming World Championsh­ips as he has been seeded third in the 65kg category in men’s freestyle compe- tition. The tournament is scheduled to held in Budapest, Hungary, from October 20 to 28.

DAKAR 2019 SQUAD

MOROCCO: Sherco TVS Rally Factory Team on Thursday announced a four-rider squad for Dakar 2019, scheduled to take place between January 6 –17, 2019 in Peru. The team includes the experience­d Metge brothers Michael and Adrien from France, Enduro champion Lorenzo Santolino from Spain and an Indian rider (to be selected).

DELHI SNOOKER

NEWDELHI: Puneet Sharma qualified for the main draw of the 41st Delhi State 15-Red Sr. Snooker Championsh­ip at Megapool Academy, when he defeated Manish Sharma 65-56, 76-30 and 54-43. Puneet also made a break of 47 in the match. The winner and runners-up of the championsh­ip will represent Delhi in the nationals early next year.

NEHRU HOCKEY FINAL

NEW DELHI: Amritsar’s Khalsa College Senior Secondary School set up title clash with Tika Ram Senior Secondary School (Sonepat) in the Nehru hockey tournament for girls (u-17). In the semifinals played here at the Shivaji Stadium on Thursday, Amritsar beat Government School Thenzwal (Mizoram) 2-0 while Sonepat team defeated Government Girls Model School (Chandigarh) by 4-2 in shoot out.
