Cyber crime teams set up, cops tell HC
NEW DELHI : The Delhi Police has informed the high court that it has constituted six-member teams in each police district to collect and analyse electronic evidence and help police stations concerned investigate cyber crimes.
There are 14 police districts in Delhi. The police told the court that each team will have at least one woman officer.
The police made the submission on September 18 when the court was hearing the petition of a woman who said a man threw acid on her and posted objectionable pictures on social media after she rejected his marriage proposal.
The court disposed of her plea the same day but a signed order, a copy of which is in HT’S possession, was released on Friday.
Rahul Mehra, the standing counsel for the Delhi government — which was one of the respondents in the case, informed Justice Najmi Waziri that the teams could play a vital role in investigation since in most cases there is some element of electronic evidence or footprint.
The teams, comprising “qualified personnel having due academic qualification and technical competence” will help police collect technological evidence and analyse it, Mehra said.
The woman had filed the petition in 2015 through advocate Shashank Deo Sudhi. Besides, seeking police protection, she had sought directions to issue comprehensive guidelines to police authorities for the effective dealing of such complaints.
While disposing of the woman’s plea , the court said protection should be continued to the woman in accordance with its earlier orders.
The court said the cyber crime team members should be appointed i n the next two months, failing which it would issue directions.
It also directed the DCP (EOW) and cyber cell to file an affidavit of compliance on or before November 30. .
