Srinagar records 1.8% turnout in J&K local polls

SRINAGAR: The third phase of Jammu and Kashmir local body polls on Saturday witnessed 16.4% voter turnout in seven municipal bodies of four districts, the lowest so far.

Continuing the trend of low voter t urnout, t he Valley recorded 3.5% voting while Jammu continued with its healthy voting trend at 81.4% voter turnout in Samba.

Bari Brahamana.in Jammu’s Samba district recorded highest turnout at 85.73% while in Kashmir, Baramulla’s Uri municipal committee recorded the highest percentage of 75.3 %.

In Kashmir, the lowest voting took place in summer capital Srinagar with 1.8% turnout.

Chief electoral officer of Jammu and Kashmir Shaleen Kabra said, in three phases so far, Kashmir region has recorded 6.7% turnout and Jammu region has recorded 68.4% turnout, adding that put together, the three phases have recorded an overall percentage of 41.9%.

In Jammu’s Samba, Ramgarh with 3,547 votes recorded 82.77% turnout, Samba with 12,395 votes recorded 78.77% and Vijaypur with 4,603 votes recorded 85.39% turnout.

Anantnag recorded a 3.2% polling among 5,469 electors including re-polling at a polling station where elections could not be held on October 10 during second phase.

There were 365 candidates in the fray for 96 wards of 8 Urban Local Bodies for the 3rd Phase comprising a total electorate of 193,990 electors.
