Man attacks, kills 65-year-old aunt in Burari

NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old man on Tuesday evening allegedly killed his 65-year-old aunt with a flower pot and a brick in north Delhi’s Burari.

Police said the accused, Kanhaiya Kumar, had also attacked his 70-year-old mother with the an earthen pot and left her critically injured.

Investigat­ions so far has revealed that the accused was mentally challenged. The murder took place when Kumar’s wife, daughter and 5-year-old son were in the house.

He has been arrested, police said.

According to the police, Kumar’s teenaged daughter was also injured when she tried to stop the accused. Detailing the sequence of events that led to the murder, she said that Kumar had returned home around 9.30 pm and got into a fight with his wife Sunita.

“The girl said that her father asked Sunita not to step out of the house without asking him. On this, Kumar’s mother Maya (70) and aunt Bala Devi (65) started supporting Sunita. The two elderly woman told Kumar that since he cannot earn, Sunita requires to step of the house and earn money. Seeing the two women intervene, Kumar got agitated and rushed out of the house.

He later returned with a brick and smashed it on Maya’s face,” a police officer not authorised to speak to the media, said.

Kumar’s daughter also told police that when Bala Devi tried to save Maya, Kumar picked up a mud-filled earthen pot and threw it on Devi’s head. Police said Kumar also tried to hurt Poonam, her 5-year-old brother Sonu and their mother Sunita, but they managed to flee .

Hearing the ruckus, neighbours gathered and someone called the police. A police team arrived on the spot and rushed the woman to a hospital where Bala Devi succumbed to her injuries while Maya is under treatment.

Deputy commission­er of police (North) Nupur Prasad said that the police team tracked down Kumar and arrested from near his house.
