Boy drowns in Sanjay Van lake

NEW DELHI: A 16-year-old boy drowned in Delhi Developmen­t Authority’s (DDA) Sanjay Van Lake in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj on Wednesday afternoon. Police said the boy had gone to visit the lake with his three friends when the incident took place. His body was fished out of the lake by local divers and the rescue team of Delhi Fire Service department.

The fire control room received a call around 3pm regarding drowning of a boy in Sanjay Van Lake and a rescue team along with a fire tender was rushed to the spot, said a fire official. “The boy had died by the time he was taken out of the lake,” said the fire official.

The boy as been identified as Shahid Ali, a resident of Meh- rauli. He was a Class 10 student at the local government school. Ali’s three friends told the police that as he slipped into the lake, they screamed for help. One of the security guards deployed there responded to the alert. They all tried to save Ali but could not succeed.

“There is a signboard at the lake that says the lake is deep and visitors are prohibited from stepping into it. The boy tried to enter the lake, slipped and drowned. DDA express its condolence­s to the aggrieved family and promise for all possible help,” the DDA said in a statement.
