2 DTC conductors on bike crushed in 8-vehicle pile-up

NEWDELHI: Two Delhi Transport Corporatio­n (DTC) bus conductors travelling on a motorcycle were crushed to death in a pile-up, involving eight vehicles at Ramprastha traffic signal in Vivek Vihar on Monday afternoon, police said.

The pile-up was triggered when an allegedly speeding private chartered bus rammed a school bus, which was waiting at the traffic signal. Locals and witnesses said the impact of the crash was such that the school bus went on to hit a Uttar Pradesh Roadways bus, which then rammed a DTC cluster bus, said a police officer.

Two auto-rickshaws and two motorcycle­s also got crushed between the buses.

Police said Satish Kumar and Rupender Kumar, both were bus conductors employed with DTC. They were not on duty and returning home at the time of the accident. Police said they received informatio­n at the Vivek Vihar police station at around 3 pm. When a police team reached the spot, it saw eight vehicles piled up at the traffic signal. An auto driver was among the injured.

Police found that four men had been pulled out of the piled up vehicles and were rushed to a hospital.

While two of them were pronounced dead in hospital, the other two were admitted for treatment.

“The two DTC bus conductors were riding a motorcycle. The motorcycle was crushed in the accident. They had died on the spot. We have informed the families of the two men. Their bodies were sent for a post mortem,” the officer said.

Deputy commission­er of police ( Shahadra) Meghna Yadav said the driver of the chartered bus, which was allegedly speeding, fled from the spot.

“We are collecting his details. We are making all efforts to trace him. A case under section of causing death due to negligence and rash driving was registered at Vivek Vihar police station. We are looking at the CCTV footages of the accident to establish the sequence of events,” the DCP said.
