NEW DELHI: Delhi reported 280 cases of dengue in the week ending on November 10, according to the weekly report released by the municipal corporations on Monday. This takes the total number of cases to 1,875 in Delhi.

This is a slight decline from the 285 cases that were reported last week.

The corporations reported another 509 cases for which addresses were not provided. Apart from this, 2,529 people from neighbouring states received treatment for dengue in city hospitals, according to the report.

Although, the number of cases of dengue have gone down, doctors are still seeing several patients with similar symptoms.

“This year, we expected to see fewer cases by now after the temperature dipped. However, we are still getting several dengue patients,” said Dr Rommel Tickoo, senior consultant of internal medicine at Max Superspeciality Hospital in Saket..

Eight cases of chikungunya were also reported by the corporations in this week’s report, taking the total number of cases to 141. In the same report, 12 cases of malaria were reported, with a total cases of 450 now.

Bhuvanesh Kumar Gupta, 43, went to a neighbourhood physician on Friday after he had heavy fever for two days. The doctor asked him to get a complete blood count test, dengue and typhoid.

“I am aware about dengue and when my test came back positive on Sunday, I rushed to Max hospital, Saket,” said Gupta, a businessman from Khirki extension. He was admitted to the hospital and his vitals were being monitored.

This year, Gupta was surprised that no one in his area got dengue.

“This was a simple case of dengue. Even though he was nau- seous and wasn’t drinking too much water, so we kept him hydrated with a saline drip and gave him symptomatic treatment. We will just monitor his platelet count for another day and then discharge him,” said Dr Tickoo, who is treating Gupta.

A municipal health official said since temperature has dipped, the number of cases have also reduced.

“And, the numbers are likely to go down further over the next two weeks,” the official said, requesting anonymity since he was not authorised to speak to the media.

“However, the transmission is likely to continue with very few cases being reported if we have a warmer winter. This is what we saw in previous years with cases being reported even in January, when it’s relatively colder,” the official said.
