NEWDELHI: Water supply is likely to remain affected in various parts of Delhi owing to high levels of ammonia in raw water in the Yamuna over the next two days.

“Water supply will be available at low pressure in north and central Delhi while parts of south and west Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and cantonment areas are likely to be affected as well,” said a statement issued by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) on the issue on Tuesday.

The supply will be affected as water treatment plants in Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla will function below capacity.

The treatment plants pump raw water from the Yamuna to supply drinking water to all these areas.

Residents of north Delhi’s Ashok Vihar said the locality received Yamuna water at a reduced pressure level even on Tuesday.

“Water supply both during morning and evening was at a low pressure level. The issue has become perennial, as ammonia levels increase in the Yamuna after every few months. The authorities must find a solution to this problem so that residents do not have to suffer,” said Ashok Khurana, a resident of Ashok Vihar’s Phase –II.

According to DJB officials, ammonia levels in the river must be nil.

However, untreated industrial effluents from various dyeing units in Haryana bring huge amounts of ammonia in the river, which make it difficult for the water to be treated.
