Police officer Suhai hailed as heroine for foiling Karachi attack
ISLAMABAD: Suhai Aziz Talpur, the woman police officer who played an instrumental role in the security operation against terrorists who attacked the Chinese consulate in Karachi on Friday, has been feted by many individuals and organisations for her bravery and timely response to the assault.
Two policemen were killed in the terrorist attack before police killed all three attackers in a gun battle.
Talpur, one of the few women SSPS in Karachi, hails from a middle income family of Bhai Khan Talpur village in Tando Muhammad Khan district of Sindh province.
She told the media that when her parents decided to enrol her at school, most of her relatives started taunting the family.
“So much so, my family had to leave our village and move to a nearby town,” said Talpur, who will soon be promoted to the rank of superintendent of police. She has also been recommended for the Quaid-i-azam police medal.
Her father Aziz Talpur, a political activist and writer, always dreamt big for his daughter.
“My parents are nationalists. As a child, they used to emphasise that I memorise Sindhi poetry. This developed my interest in literature and history, leading me to secure top marks in both the subjects in the CSS (Central Superior Services) exams,” she said.
Bureaucrats and police officers are chosen through the test.
Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi tweeted: “Pakistan is proud of all its brave daughters like SP Suhai Aziz.
“She was among the first to reach the Chinese Consulate and she successfully led the operation that thwarted the terrorist attack in Karachi.”
