NEW DELHI: The Delhi government’s transport department after an inspection of the regional transport office (RTO) in Burari on Tuesday wrote to the traffic police asking them to take measures to regulate the huge traffic jams outside the unit.

It has also asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to find out road-designing options as a long-term measure to allow smooth vehicular movement.

The move was prompted after several complaints of vehicles piling up at the entry to the RTO at the main intersection on the Burari road.

According to officials who inspected the area, over 500 vehicles cross the intersection every day. However, there is no traffic signal at the crossing resulting in long traffic snarls.

“The unmanned crossing leads to a chaos with vehicles piling up at the T-point outside the Burari fitness unit and regional transport office (RTO). A functional signal is required at the place to regulate traffic movement in the area,” said a senior transport department official.

Also, the department has suggested that traffic personnel be deployed at the signal between 8am and 8pm, during which traffic movement is heavy on the stretch. Besides, the department has asked the PWD to study the road and look for a suitable point to provide a signal-free U-turn.

Meanwhile, special commissioner (transport) KK Dahiya said, “In association with the traffic police, the transport department will make all efforts to ensure smooth traffic movement on the stretch.”
