NEWDELHI: The presence of mind shown by a couple helped police arrest a burglar who had entered their house in east Delhi in the early hours of Saturday.

After the couple realised there was a burglar in their house, they locked him inside, even as he threatened to shoot them. They raised an alarm and called the police.

Deputy commissioner of police (east) Pankaj Singh said they received a PCR call at around 4.30am reporting the incident, after which a team went to the house and caught the burglar.

Police identified the alleged burglar only by his first name — Rashid.

“We have registered a case under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and arrested him,” DCP Singh said.

The case was registered on the complaint of Ashish Bisht, who lives on the second floor of a building with his wife.

He told police that his wife heard some noise in the house at around 4am and woke him up.

The couple peeped through their bedroom window and saw a man searching the cupboards in the room.

They said they locked the room from outside.

“When the burglar realised that he was locked in, he started threatening the couple to shoot if they did not open the door. However, the couple showed courage and called the police,” said a police officer, associated with the case.
