‘Gamblers’ jump from second floor to escape arrest, fall in police net

NEW DELHI: In their bid to escape arrest during a police raid at a gambling den in east Delhi’s Vishwas Nagar on Thursday, three men jumped off the second floor of a building, police said.

The trio not only suffered fractures in the process, they also ended up getting caught just after landing as a police team had that escape route covered.

By the end of the dramatic raid, the police nabbed a total of 15 men aged between 25 and 60 years and booked them under the Public Gambling Act, said Meghna Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara).

The alleged gambling racket was operating from the second floor of a residential building in Vishwas Nagar that falls under the jurisdiction of Farsh Bazar police station.

“A patrolling team received a tip-off about the gambling den on Thursday afternoon. Senior offi- cers were alerted and a search warrant readied after which we raided the building,” said an investigator.

Inside the flat, several men were allegedly putting cash at stake while gambling with cards. “When they saw the police team, they tried to run away. While most tried to escape through the door, three jumped out of the balconies of the second floor,” said the officer.

The trio escaped life-threatening injuries but ended up with fractures. A police team that had waited nearby immediately caught them and moved them to Dr Hedgewar Hospital for treatment. The police said they are out of danger and have been apprehended. The police also caught 12 others while a few managed to slip away.

The injured men have been identified as Sahil, 25, Ravi, 60, and Suresh, 28. The trio and the other 12 nabbed men are residents of east Delhi neighbourhoods.
