LONDON/NEWDELHI: A UK court is likely to deliver on Monday its verdict in a trial to decide on the extradition of beleaguered liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya, who is wanted in India for alleged fraud and money laundering worth about ₹9,000 crore.

A joint team of officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate left for London on Sunday to attend the court proceedings. The team is led by CBI’S joint director A Sai Manohar, who now heads the agency’s special investigation team in absence of special director Rakesh Asthana.

Asthana was divested of his responsibility as the special director along with his boss and CBI chief Alok Verma on October 23, when the government stepped in to stem the war between them over charges and counter-charges of corruption. He attended the previous hearings i n Mallya’s case and assisted the crown prosecution service, which presented India’s case for the extradition. Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami combined to tear through Australia’s top order and bring India within six wickets of victory India have never won a seriesopening Test match in Australia but spinner Ashwin and paceman Shami set up the platform to break new ground

IF THE JUDGE RULES ON MONDAY THAT THERE ARE NO LEGAL BARS TO HIS EXTRADITION, VIJAY MALLYA WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO APPEAL IN HIGHER COURTS IN THE UK
