Manika is table tennis’ Breakthrou­gh Star

NEW DELHI: Table tennis player Manika Batra became the first Indian to get the ‘Breakthrou­gh Table Tennis Star’ award at the ITTF Star Awards, in Incheon on Wednesday. “I am honoured and happy to have received the award. I feel, 2018 has been the best year of my career so far and I am happy for what I have achieved,” Manika said at the ceremony.

Manika started the year on a high at the 2018 Commonweal­th Games, guiding India to its firstgold in women’s team category. She also bagged gold in the singles category, defeating former World No 4 Feng Tianwei.

The 23-year-old Arjuna awardee then partnered Sharath Kamal to clinch bronze in the mixed doubles category of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Parvesh Bhainswal and Sunil Kumar led the defence for Gujarat and contained Haryana raiders throughout the match at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

NEW DELHI : Angrez Singh of Punjab Police clinched the 110m hurdles gold, clocking 14.81 sec, in the 67th All India Police Athletics Championsh­ip being organised by CISF at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Amrut Tivale of Maharashtr­a Police won silver, timing 14.92. The 4x100m women’s relay gold was won by SSB with its runners, Bhateri, Anurupa Kumar, Ranga K and Jilna MV, timing 46.41 sec, followed by CRPF runners who clocked 46.73.

ATHLETICS FOR BLIND

NEW DELHI: The four-day long Usha National Athletics Championsh­ips for the Blind commenced here with more than 500 participan­ts, i ncluding 150 women, participat­ing in the event. Ranjana Devi won the women’s javelin event (B1) with a throw of 10.59m. Tamphasana Devi ( Manipur) won the women’s B2 javelin event (13.21m). Other results: (Men) Long Jump B1: Parmar Jagdish (Gujarat) 4.72; Javelin B1: Majirana Bharat (Gujarat) 31.89.

MUMBAI: Former Asian Tour winner Digvijay Singh of Gurugram and Lucknow’s Sanjeev Kumar took the early lead at the CG Open after posting a matching six-under-64 on the opening day on Wednesday.
