Two trapped in burning car saved by policemen in Dilshad Garden

NEWDELHI: Two men trapped in a burning Chevrolet Beat car were rescued by a police team in east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden on Saturday night, police said.

The policemen broke open the glass windows of the car to rescue the men and then used a fire extinguisher kept in their van to douse the flames.

The car had gone up in the flames around 11.20pm on Saturday. The two trapped men, Kamil and Multazin, were travelling from Meerut to Delhi when the incident occurred near a police booth in Dilshad Garden. Kamil lives in Delhi’s Jama Masjid area, Multazin hails from Meerut.

“The police control room received a call at 11.23pm about two men being trapped in a burning car. We immediately dispatched a PCR van that was near Chintamani Chowk,” said Deepak Purohit, deputy commissioner of police (PCR).

The three policemen in the PCR van included assistant subinspectors Rishi Kumar and Naresh Kumar, and driver, constable Surender.

The policemen arrived to find the car in flames and the two men trapped because the vehicle’s central locking system had jammed, likely due to the fire burning the car’s wires, said a police officer.

The policemen immediately swung into action and used bricks to break open the glass windows and pull out the two occupants.

The policemen then brought out a fire extinguisher kept in their PCR van and extinguished the flames before the fire tenders arrived. “The policemen displayed presence of mind and high sense of duty to save the lives of persons trapped in the car,” said the DCP, adding that they would be rewarded.
