One-way traffic on 2 Karol Bagh roads from today
AS A PILOT PROJECT, TRAFFIC AT THE PADAM SINGH ROAD AND TANK ROAD IN KAROL BAGH WILL BE ONLY ONE-WAY
NEW DELHI: Two roads in central Delhi’s busy Karol Bagh market will allow traffic from a single direction starting Monday, Delhi Traffic Police officials said.
As a pilot project, traffic at the Padam Singh Road and Tank Road in Karol Bagh will be only one-way.
Traffic officials said that the plan is being implemented in consultation with the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, and by July-end, four other roads in the market—pyaare Lal Road, Hardhyan Singh Road, Gurudwara Road and Saraswati Marg—will also be made one-way.
Traffic deputy commissioner of police (central range) Rakesh Pawaria said that the idea behind the traffic circulation plan is to direct the chaotic traffic in the Karol Bagh towards one point, to allow seamless movement.
“The plan was approved by Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) in 2010, but could not be implemented for various reasons. But now, with the recent fire incident, the plan was reevaluated,” Pawaria said.
In February, at least 17 people, including a child and a woman, were killed in a fire at the Hotel Arpit Palace hotel in Karol Bagh.
DCP Pawaria said that from Monday, vehicles on Padam Singh Road will be diverted towards Guru Ravidas Marg via Pusa Road, and from Tank Road will be directed towards the Gurudwara Road via Guru Ravidas Road. The plan has also been formulated for the remaining four roads and will be implemented gradually, officials said.
According to the traffic plan, traffic from Pyaare Lal Road will be directed towards Guru Ravi Das Road from Faiz Road, from Hardhyan Singh Road towards Faiz Road from Guru Ravi Das Road, from Gurudwara Road to Desh Bandhu Gupta Road via Pusa Road and from Saraswati Marg towards Maharana Pratap Road via Desh Bandhu Gupta Road.
“At present, traffic on these roads comes from all directions. From tomorrow (Monday) around 50 traffic personnel, along with marshals from the municipality, will be deployed at the Tank Road-padam Singh Road intersection to man the traffic,” Pawaria said.
The traffic plan is being implemented to support the recent pedestrianisation of the Ajmal Khan Road in busy Karol Bagh market, which was brought into effect earlier this month.
The officials of the North Delhi municipal corporation said that the plan has elicited a positive response from traders, residents and shoppers alike, who have agreed that the move has cleared the road of chaos.
After pedestrianisation of Ajmal Khan Road, the civic agency had also increased rates of on-street parking on Arya Samaj Road to promote parking in designated spaces.
The rates for the first one hour of parking on Arya Samaj Road were raised from ₹20 to ₹40.
The rates for parking of up to five hours were increased from ₹50 to ₹70, and those of more than five hours were hiked to ₹ 300.
